Coach Shepard grew up in Burbank, CA, and graduated from John Burroughs High School. He was invited into their athletic Hall of Fame as a 3 sport letterman in football, baseball, and basketball. Finishing high school, he attended California Lutheran University receiving a B.S. in Human Resource Management. Along with winning a National Championship in football, Mike won awards such as “Outstanding Lineman” in the Championship game, Outstanding Christian Athlete, and Outstanding Senior. He was captain of the baseball team and was inducted into the university’s athletic Hall of Fame for both sports. He went on to play professional baseball for the Portland Mavericks.
Choosing to pursue football coaching as his profession, Mike attended Brigham Young University as a graduate assistant, completing an M.S. in Physical Education. Prior to coming on staff with FCA, Mike was a football coach for 37 years. He spend 19 years at the college level including USIU, Idaho State, Long Beach State, Kansas, New Mexica and California. He was Head Coach at Long Beach and New Mexico. Sheppard spent the next 18 years in the National Football League- coaching in Cleveland, Baltimore, San Diego, Seattle, Buffalo, New Orleans, Cincinnati, and Jacksonville.
FCA has been a major player in the Shepard Family as well for the last 26 years- serving as a speaker at retreats and Head Football Clinician as our summer sports camps. Three of his four children have asked Christ to become their personal Savior at FCA camp! Mike has joined our FCA staff as Western Region Director of Coaches Ministry, one of our first actions as FCA focuses on taking our ministry “to and through the coach”. He serves all coaches in the Western Region through developing coaches’ huddles and presenting “3 Dimensional Coaching” concepts, among other programs. Mike lives in San Clemente with his wife, Cathie.
